ER385 Supplier For Welding 904L Stainless Steel
ER385 welding wire is a high-performance super austenitic stainless steel filler metal specifically designed for welding 904L stainless steel (UNS N08904). With elevated nickel, molybdenum, and copper content, ER385 provides outstanding resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, chloride stress corrosion, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion.
It is ideal for chemical processing equipment, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, offshore structures, marine engineering, and desalination plants where long-term corrosion resistance is critical.

1. Superior Corrosion Resistance
ER385 welding wire provides exceptional resistance in sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, seawater, and chloride environments. It is perfect for 904L stainless steel welding in highly aggressive chemical and marine applications.
2. Excellent Mechanical Properties
It delivers high tensile and yield strength while maintaining good ductility and impact toughness, ensuring durable welds for critical industrial applications.
3. Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance
Its high nickel and molybdenum content reduces the risk of chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC), outperforming standard austenitic stainless steel filler metals like ER316L.
4. Excellent Weldability
Smooth arc performance, low spatter, and reliable wire feeding make ER385 suitable for MIG, TIG, and automated welding operations.
5. Wide Industrial Applications
It is widely used in chemical processing, fertilizer production, offshore oil & gas, desalination plants, flue gas desulfurization systems, and power generation equipment.
ER385 welding wire is suitable for:
⚠️Note: For 254SMO (UNS S31254) or 6% Mo super austenitics, consider higher alloyed fillers like ERNiCrMo-3 (Alloy 625). ER385 may work but validation is recommended.
Available as:
| Process | Diameter Range |
|---|---|
| TIG (GTAW) | 1.6 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.4 mm, 3.2 mm |
| MIG (GMAW) | 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.6 mm |
📧 Custom diameters and OEM packaging available. Contact support@ronsteel.com.
TIG (GTAW): 100% Argon
MIG (GMAW): Argon + 1–2% OxygenorArgon + 2–3% CO₂
Note: To maintain optimum corrosion resistance, avoid high CO₂ mixes (>5%) which can cause carbon pick-up. Keep heat input ≤1.5 kJ/mm and interpass temperature ≤150°C (300°F).
For maximum corrosion performance in highly aggressive environments (e.g., hot sulfuric acid):
Ø Pickling and passivationafter welding is recommended to remove weld oxide (heat tint).
Ø Solution annealing (1050–1100°C followed by water quench) is generallynot requiredfor as-welded applications, but may benefit thick sections or severe service.
Ø Stable feeding and smooth arc– consistent deposition
Ø Full traceability & quality control– per AWS/ASME standards
Ø Global supply experience– distributors, fabricators, EPC contractors
Ø OEM & private label packaging– export-ready solutions
Which base metals can ER385 weld?
Primarily 904L (UNS N08904) and similar super austenitic grades (e.g., 1.4539). Not designed for duplex or 6% Mo super austenitics – use ERNiCrMo-3 for those.
Is ER385 resistant to seawater and chemical plant environments?
Yes. It offers excellent resistance to chloride, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid environments.
Can ER385 be used for both MIG and TIG welding?
Yes. Available as TIG rods (cut lengths) and MIG wire (spools/drums).
Why choose ER385 over ER316L for 904L?
ER385 matches the alloy content of 904L, providing proper corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. ER316L is under-alloyed and risks premature failure
Does the ER385 weld require solution annealing?
Generally not. As-welded properties are sufficient for most applications. For very aggressive media or thick sections, annealing (1050–1100°C + water quench) may improve corrosion resistance.
Need ER385 MIG wire or TIG rods for 904L welding?
