Hastelloy C-276 Welding Wire (ERNiCrMo-4) Supplier | Properties & Welding Guide

Date: 2026-06-10

Hastelloy C-276 welding wire is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten solid welding consumable designed for severe corrosion environments where conventional stainless steel filler metals fail.

It is widely used for welding C-276 base alloy and for overlay or dissimilar metal welding in chemical processing, marine engineering, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and oil & gas systems.

At Ronsco, we supply ERNiCrMo-4 welding wire with stable chemical composition control, strict batch traceability, and full export documentation for global industrial procurement.

Chemical Composition (AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-4)
Element Range (%) Functional Role
Nickel (Ni) Balance Matrix stability, corrosion resistance base
Chromium (Cr) 14.5 – 16.5 Oxidation resistance, passive film formation
Molybdenum (Mo) 15.0 – 17.0 Resistance to pitting & crevice corrosion
Tungsten (W) 3.0 – 4.5 Stability in mixed chemical environments
Iron (Fe) 4.0 – 7.0 Solid solution strengthening
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.02 Prevents carbide precipitation
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.08 Improves cleanliness of weld metal
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1.0 Deoxidation control

👉 High Mo + W system is the key reason for resistance to chloride-rich and reducing acid environments.

Mechanical Properties of Weld Metal
Property Requirement (AWS) Typical Value
Tensile Strength ≥ 690 MPa ≥ 760 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 350 MPa
Elongation ≥ 30% 30–40%

👉 The weld metal maintains high ductility while retaining excellent corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance Mechanism (Engineering Explanation)

The corrosion resistance of C-276 welding wire is achieved through a dual protection mechanism:

  • Chromium provides oxidation resistance by forming a passive oxide layer, especially in oxidizing media such as nitric acid or oxygen-rich environments.
  • Molybdenum significantly improves resistance to localized corrosion, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and flue gas condensates.
  • Tungsten enhances performance in mixed oxidizing-reducing environments, where the stability of the passive film is continuously challenged by fluctuating chemical conditions.

Because of this multi-element synergy, C-276 maintains stable performance in both reducing acids such as hydrochloric acid and oxidizing media, which is rare among nickel-based alloys.

Hastelloy C-276 Welding Wire Procedure and Parameters

Successful welding of Hastelloy C-276 welding wire requires careful control of cleanliness, heat input, and interpass temperature. The base material should be free from oil, grease, oxides, and chloride contamination before welding begins. In most applications, preheating is not required, and the interpass temperature should generally be maintained below 150°C to minimize microsegregation and preserve corrosion resistance.

  • For GTAW (TIG) welding, 100% argon shielding gas and DCEN polarity are commonly used.
  • For GMAW (MIG) welding, argon or argon-helium mixtures are preferred, while CO₂ additions are generally avoided because they can increase oxidation of the weld metal.

Moderate heat input and controlled travel speed help maintain the alloy’s corrosion-resistant microstructure.

After welding, most C-276 fabrications can be used directly in the as-welded condition without post-weld heat treatment. If surface oxide removal is required, pickling or appropriate mechanical cleaning methods may be applied according to project specifications.

C-276 vs Other Nickel Welding Wires

C-276 vs Inconel 625 (ERNiCrMo-3)

C-276 provides superior corrosion resistance in chemical and chloride environments, while 625 offers better high-temperature mechanical strength.

C-276 vs C-22 (ERNiCrMo-10)

C-276 performs better in reducing acid environments, while C-22 is more optimized for oxidizing conditions.

👉 C-276 is the most “balanced corrosion-resistant” nickel alloy filler metal.
